Christchurch is finally geared up to welcome the Repco Supercars Championship, and the excitement in Ōtautahi is palpable. From April 17–19, 2026, the roar of V8s will echo through Ruapuna Motorsport Park for the very first time. But let’s be honest—the biggest storyline for us locals is Matt Payne. The Kiwi star and Bathurst 1000 champion is our own "King of the Mountain," and seeing him battle it out on his home South Island circuit is going to be massive. Whether you’re a petrolhead from way back or just here for the atmosphere, here is everything you need to know to navigate the weekend like a pro.
The Ruapuna Experience
This is a historic moment for Canterbury. Because this is the inaugural year for Supercars at Ruapuna, the venue has been undergoing some serious prep work. Led by the Canterbury Car Club and backed by the Council and Supercars, the track is receiving targeted upgrades to ensure it meets strict safety standards for both the drivers and us spectators.
The vibe promises to be high-octane and fierce. While the immediate focus is on safety compliance, this is just the beginning; infrastructure enhancements are set to continue in the years to come to turn this into a world-class motorsport destination. Expect a raw, authentic racing atmosphere as the drivers get to grips with a circuit that is brand new to the championship calendar.
Getting There & Parking
Traffic can be a headache at major events, so you need a game plan. You have two main distinct choices here: the savvy free option or the paid convenience.
The Smart Local Choice: Free Park n Ride My advice? Head to the Canterbury Agricultural Park (102 Curletts Road, Sockburn). There is a free "Park n Ride" service running from there to the raceway. No booking is necessary—just park your vehicle and jump on the free shuttle. It’s the most hassle-free way to avoid the congestion at the track gates.
The Premium Option ($120) If you absolutely must have your car nearby, you can purchase a Premium Carpark pass. This costs $120 and secures you a 3-day spot just outside an entry gate. However, these are limited and must be bought online before you arrive.
A Note on Free On-Site Parking: Technically, there is some free parking at the venue, but it is extremely limited and allocated on a strict first-in, first-served basis. Unless you plan to arrive at the crack of dawn, I wouldn’t risk it.

Where to Watch
Ruapuna is a bit of a rugged, classic Kiwi track, which makes for great viewing if you know what to expect.
General Admission (The Real Fan Experience): The venue is a mix of sealed roads, dirt tracks, and grass, so leave the fancy shoes at home. The great news for General Admission ticket holders is that the viewing areas around the track are generally raised above the racetrack surface, giving you excellent sightlines of the action. You will have to navigate some inclines and descents, but the elevation helps you see over the fences.
Accessibility Viewing: If you have accessibility requirements, there is a dedicated viewing area located between Turn 10 and Turn 11, near Gate B. Make sure to email the commercial team when you grab your General Admission ticket to sort out your requirements.
Corporate: If you prefer hospitality over sitting on the grass berms, look out for the "Engine Room" tickets, which are also wheelchair friendly.
After the Race
Once the checkered flag drops, don't rush back to the hotel. Christchurch city is compact, connected, and buzzing with energy. Here are three ways to keep the weekend going:
1. Hit the Town: Ōtautahi comes alive after dark. Whether you want a rooftop bar, an underground speakeasy, or a dance floor, the central city has a massive variety of spots to grab a drink and dissect the race stats.
2. Ride the Christchurch Tram: If you need to wind down, take a loop on the iconic tram. It’s a great way to see the central city sights at a leisurely pace without wearing out your legs anymore than you did at the track.
3. Explore the Street Art: Christchurch is famous for its creative spirit. Take a stroll through the inner city to discover huge, colourful murals and artworks by inspiring artists—it’s a great way to see the city's modern personality.
