Special Events are the one-off, big-stage nights of New Zealand motorsport: stadium shows, international championship finals and global tours making their New Zealand debut. Find upcoming Race Of Champions, World Supercross and stadium supercross events, with dates, venues and where to get tickets.

Where to Watch

Special events are the one-off, big-stage nights of New Zealand motorsport: international stars, temporary stadium circuits and full entertainment programmes. Most run for one or two evenings and sell through ticketing agencies, so it pays to book early. On the 2026–27 calendar:

Race Of Champions — Wellington

9–10 January 2027 at Hnry Stadium. The first Race Of Champions held in New Zealand: drivers from Formula 1, Supercars, rally and more race head-to-head in identical cars on a temporary asphalt circuit. Saturday is the ROC Nations Cup and Sunday decides the Champion of Champions. Tickets from $49 NZD via Ticketek NZ. See the event details and our Race of Champions NZ 2027 guide.

FIM World Supercross Championship — Christchurch

5 December 2026 at One New Zealand Stadium (Te Kaha). The 2026 WSX season finale and the first World Supercross event in New Zealand. As of October 2026 tickets were not yet on sale and a waitlist was open. Event details.

Boost Mobile AUSX Supercross — Auckland

31 October 2026 at North Harbour Stadium, Albany. Supercross returns to Auckland after seven years, with FMX, a Fan Fest and rider signings. Tickets via Ticketmaster NZ. Event details.

Stadium events usually run in the evening — check each listing for the latest gate and start times.

Have a Go

Most special events are watch-only, but several offer a closer look behind the scenes.

  • Race Of Champions: hospitality packages include The Pavilion, the Champions Club / Lounge and ROC All Access, which adds behind-the-scenes paddock access and driver Q&As.
  • AUSX Supercross Auckland: VIP and Pit Party experiences, plus a pre-race Fan Fest and rider meet-and-greets.

If you'd like to drive yourself, look at the Track Days and Driving Experiences categories — no licence needed for most, and many are open to first-timers.

Compete Properly

Special events aren't open-entry. Race Of Champions invites champions from different series to race head-to-head, and the World Supercross Championship and AUSX Supercross are professional championships with contracted riders. No club membership or competition licence gets you onto these grids.

If watching makes you want to race

The realistic pathway starts much smaller — a track day, then a ClubSport event through a MotorSport NZ-affiliated club, or a KartSport NZ club if karting appeals. Our How to Start Racing in NZ guide walks through it step by step. Supercross fans should look at the Motorcycle Racing category for the Motorcycling New Zealand pathway.

Car & Gear

You don't need any gear to watch, but a few things make a stadium night easier.

  • Ear protection: engines, pyrotechnics and crowd noise are loud, especially for young children.
  • Arrive early: stadium entry can mean queues and security checks, so check the venue's entry and bag rules before you go.
  • Plan your transport: stadiums are in city centres. For Hnry Stadium in Wellington, Metlink trains run every 30 minutes from Wellington Railway Station via the Fran Wilde Walkway.
  • Dress for the evening: most shows run at night, so bring a warm layer even in summer.
  • Keep tickets handy: tickets are usually delivered digitally by the ticketing agency, so charge your phone.

FAQ

What counts as a motorsport special event?

One-off or touring international motorsport events held in stadiums or on temporary circuits — for example Race Of Champions in Wellington, the World Supercross Championship finale in Christchurch and AUSX Supercross in Auckland.

How are special events different from regular race meetings?

They are commercially promoted, usually run over one or two evenings, and sold through ticketing agencies rather than paid for at the gate like a typical club meeting. Always check each listing for ticket details.

Where do I buy tickets for NZ special events?

Through the official ticketing partner linked on each listing — for example Ticketek NZ for Race Of Champions and Ticketmaster NZ for AUSX Supercross Auckland. NZShift never sells tickets directly.

Do I need to know motorsport to enjoy them?

No. They are built as entertainment nights with big jumps, stunts, fireworks and star drivers, so first-timers enjoy them as much as long-time fans.

Are special events in NZ one-offs?

Many are first-time or one-off visits: Race Of Champions Wellington is the first ROC held in New Zealand and the WSX Christchurch round is the first World Supercross event in the country. Dates and venues can change, so confirm with the organiser.
