What's the top level of drifting in New Zealand?
Enter a beginner-friendly drift day — most circuits run open practice days where road-registered cars are welcome with a helmet and basic safety checks. No competition licence needed to practise.
Any rear-wheel-drive car with a manual gearbox will do to learn — plenty of Kiwis start in stock Silvias, Skylines, BMWs or Falcons. A hydraulic handbrake and welded diff come later.
Yes — competitions are ticketed spectator events, and most practice days allow spectating for free or a small gate fee. Each listing above shows spectator details.
National championship competition draws NZ's professional drivers and international guests, with rounds at major circuits. Regional series and winter championships feed into it.

The 2026/27 Drift South season kicks off on Saturday 10 October 2026. Drift South is the South Island's home of competitive drifting, run by the Canterbury Car Club and sanctioned by MotorSport New Zealand.

The main series runs two classes: the Road Rubber Drift Championship and the Japrace Development Series. Entries are open through the MotorSport NZ online system, and the regulations for Round 1 are published on the Drift South website. To encourage North Island drivers to make the trip, entry is free for competitors crossing the Cook Strait.

Spectators: $20 at the gate, with cars on track from about 10:30am to 5:00pm. Discounted pre-sale tickets are expected to be available through Japrace.

The date of Round 4 may change once Supercars announce their 2027 dates for Ruapuna. See driftsouth.nz for the latest news, entry information and results.
